Piñata goes bang!

So I was all excited when I received the above invitation for Katie & Kaarina's birthday party until the typical conundrum hit me, what on earth was I going to wear! On top of this, Katie's parties are known for the efforts folks go I googled diligently for inspiration...
meh! Nothing really struck me as being it when looking back at Katie's invitation, I realised that the inspiration had been there all along ~

Random shit inspiration, Chez!
A piñata is a brightly-colored decoration and the costume I decided I was going to don! But dear reader, first I had to make this costume and so in this edition of Random shit, Chez, I'll show you how I did it:

You will need:
  • coloured A4 paper
  • lots of sticky tape
  • scissors
  • measuring tape
  • bag of sherbert bombs
  • headband
  • pipe-cleaners
  • cotton & ribbon

Step 1: Locate box of coloured A4 paper I bought in Berlin 5 years ago. Sounds easy but I had to go through lots of storage boxes to locate this baby.
Step 2: Create the fabric for piñata costume by sticky-taping sheets of the coloured paper together, then sticky-taping the coloured strips together. Make sure to leave space for 'shredding' edges a la piñata (see Step 7).

Step 3: Run out of sticky tape.

Step 4: Using this tutorial by her royal blog highness, Lady Melbourne, follow instructions to create a circle skirt out of created fabric.

Step 5: Try on for fit; the costume is taking shape!

Step 6: Tear costume whilst trying on for fit, so pull out the duct tape to reinforce the waist.
Step 7: Shred the edges of the costume to create the piñata effect.

Step 8: Use left over paper to make head piece (using pipecleaners, headband and a sherbert bomb) and vest.

Step 9: String sherbert bombs onto thread and tie around a ribbon to create a necklace.

Step 10: Transport to party in a paper bag and get changed in the venue then sneak back out (not very easy to do in this get up!) and get ready to make an entrance.

Step 8: Happy Birthday Katie!!
this bastard had the same as idea as me...

Piñata goes bang!
Step 9: And there you have it, random shit goes bang!

Today's Random shit, Chez! post comes to us courtesy of our previously mentioned friend, Dee!
Dee and her book of 500 cupcakes
If you were given a cupcake book full of 500 cupcake recipes, what would be say, the first three to five cupcakes you’d make? Vanilla, chocolate, pistachio? Heck, Rocky road or Turkish delight!? A perfect flight of fancy in any case; something sweet topped with equally lovely icing? Given a book of 500 cupcake recipes, pictured below is what Dee chose to make.
Random shit, Dee!

Green-tinged icing and topped with a cherry tomato, say hello to the savoury cupcake!
Sort of like a muffin but not, other names our friends have come up with include:

  • cuffin!
  • cakemuff!
  • cupmuff!
– now try saying all those whilst laughing with your mouth full of MUFFCAKE - the admittedly still questionable but in our opinion, more tasteful term we settled on!

Known affectionately amongst our friends as “Dee’s muffcakes”, except maybe to Dee whom we sense still harbours disapproval for perceived disrespect for her baked creation- we have found a surprising admirer for the muffcake>
Marco loves the muffcake
Now let me be clear, dear reader. I was not disrespectin’ enough to directly feed dear Marco, Dee’s muffcake. Rather his mama, Xing shares everything with him and muffcake was no exception. The moral of this random shit is that muffcake is actually really healthy and much better for you than any whimsical sweet thing and most importantly, man’s bestfriend loves it. Entrepreneurial types, you hear us? cha-ching! Now you want to make muffcakes for your mutt? Drop us a line at or leave a comment and we'll make sure you get these secret deets! Or like us to get the Facebook update!

Now wishing Dee a very Happy Birthday, I hope you have a great one and I'm sorry that the only thing you're getting from me is this random, shit! xx Chez

Hello World - this is random shit, Chez.

Dear World,

Today I was cruising around a shopping center with my mate Dee when she made the comment- "I cannot wait to see what you're going to buy here, you always buy such random shit."

Facebook's oldest recorded photo of me and Dee
And then she started laughing.  Now Dee is known amongst our friends for her unique laugh, but she wasn't so far off; I do buy a lot of random shit! However as Dee was also quick to point out - sometimes, just sometimes - the shit ends up becoming kinda cool or I do cool shit with that seemingly random purchase. Maybe it'll be a few hours down the track, a few days or in some cases, years. The purpose of this blog is to share the random shit I do that makes my friends laugh but more importantly I hope encourages others to think outside the square to do things that make both yourself and others, smile.

So in this first post, the random I'd like to share is a souvenir I bought during a random holiday to New York City back in 2007.
That's Hooi standing in NYC's iconic LOVE sign ~ I did her timesheets for six months while she was away on secondment. Good ol' Hooi always insisted that I should visit so when a three week job fell through; I did!
During this visit, I swung by the Statue of Liberty where I bought this lightweight and easy-to-pack souvenir. Since my return home, I've saved this souvenir from the bin many a time; always having this gut-instinct that it would one day come in handy...

Random shit, Chez

et voila! Here is a photo of me on my friend Kealey's roof top. Kealey's spur-of-the-moment invitation via Twitter to her Halloween party led me to throw this costume together. It consists of a random dress I found in a Prahran op shop + aforementioned souvenir.

Random shit, chez. But the moral here is, random shit = handy shit.

PS: if you're actually reading this post, thank you. To prevent this from being a full-on vanity project - please submit YOUR random shit to for your chance to feature here! Saves you the hassle of setting up your own blog or stay tuned to see what random shit your friends have to share! :D Xx
